The EU Delegation To Belarus Spoke In Defense Of Independent Mass Media

Today is World Press Freedom Day.

On World Press Freedom Day, the EU Delegation in Belarus made a statement on the situation with free media in our country.

In the statement, the EU Delegation in Belarus recalled "the importance of free and independent media and the key role of journalists and media workers."

"A government that bans free media is a government that does not trust its people with the truth. In 2025, Belarus ranked 166th out of 180 countries in the World Press Freedom Index. Journalists and media workers are systematically harassed, imprisoned on trumped-up charges, and their family and friends are persecuted. They are given inhuman sentences of 14 years in prison just for doing their job," the statement reads.

In addition, the EU Delegation demanded that Belarus fulfill its international obligations to ensure freedom and independence of the press.

"All political prisoners must be released," the statement concludes.
