India Has Stopped Water From Flowing Through A Dam On The Border With Pakistan

This can lead to a new aggravation.

India has shut off water through the Baglihar Dam on the Chenab River following the terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir. This could strain relations with Pakistan.

This is reported by Times of India.

India has stopped the flow of water through the Baglihar dam on the Chenab River after the suspension of the Indus Treaty.

The decision also includes possible similar measures at the Kishanganga dam on the Jhelum River.

According to the publication's sources, these hydroelectric dams are of great strategic importance to India as they allow regulating the timing of water releases, which could have a major impact on water resources in the region.

This decision by India follows a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir state, in which 26 people, mostly tourists, were killed.

The attack was the catalyst for the suspension of the longstanding Indus Treaty, brokered by the World Bank in 1960, which governs the use of the waters of the Indus River and its tributaries between the two countries.

The Baglihar Dam, located in Jammu, has long been a point of contention between India and Pakistan.

Pakistan has repeatedly approached the World Bank for arbitration over the dam because it considers its construction a violation of the terms of the treaty.

In particular, Pakistan claims that Baglihar has a negative impact on water resources used for irrigation and other needs.

The Kishanganga Dam, located in northern Kashmir, is also the subject of legal and diplomatic disputes.

India-Pakistan Conflict

Reminder, in the region of Kashmir, militants attacked a group of tourists. According to eyewitnesses, the terrorists killed only those who professed Hinduism.

India accused Pakistan of organizing such a terrorist attack. Also, New Delhi was temporarily withdrawing from the Indus waters agreement with Islamabad.
