The Indian Army announced Operation Sindhur aimed "against terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan." Pakistan's Defense Ministry confirmed that India had launched a missile strike on targets in the country's territory - in the cities of Bahwalpur, Kotli and Muzaffarabad (the administrative center of the Pakistan-controlled part of Kashmir).

The escalation of Indo-Pakistani relations began after a terrorist attack in the popular tourist town of Pahalgam in India's Jammu and Kashmir on April 22. Twenty-five Indian nationals and one Nepali were killed then. Indian authorities accused Pakistan of involvement in the incident.
