Vance: Russia Is Asking For Too Much In Ukraine Talks

At the same time, the US does not believe that Moscow is not at all interested in a peaceful settlement.

Russia is making excessive demands in Ukraine talks, US Vice President J.D. Vance has said.

"I would not say that the Russians are not interested in a settlement. I would say that the Russians are currently making a certain set of demands, a certain set of concessions to end the conflict. We think they're asking for too much, you know?" - Vance said, speaking in Washington at a forum organized by the Munich Security Conference.

Vance said one of the merits of US President Donald Trump was that he managed to "force" Russia to name the terms of the war settlement. The vice president said that upon reading Moscow's initial position, Washington's reaction was that "you're asking for too much." "But that's how negotiations work," he added.

Vance noted that the US was not at all surprised when it realized that there was a big difference between the positions of Russia and Ukraine. According to him, the next step should be to work out basic parameters to start a direct dialog between the sides. "We want Russia and Ukraine to agree on basic conditions for negotiations. The US is ready to participate in these discussions, but the main thing is for the parties themselves to start talking to each other," he pointed out.
