Trump Has Officially Proclaimed May 8 As U.S. Victory Day In World War II

The Trump administration issued a signed proclamation.

US President Donald Trump has officially proclaimed May 8 as World War II Victory over Nazism Day, according to the White House website on May 7.

The Trump administration issued a signed proclamation stating that tomorrow the U.S. will commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Allied victory over Nazism and fascism and the end of World War II in Europe.

"On May 8, 1945, the Allies accepted Germany's unconditional surrender - the beginning of the end of a long, terrible and brutal war. Millions of senselessly ruined souls serve as a reminder of why we must strive for peace through strength. I remain committed to ending endless foreign wars and preventing further loss of life. As I stated in my inaugural address, we will measure our success not only by the battles we win, but also by the wars we end, and my proudest legacy will be that of a peacemaker," the White House quoted President Trump as saying.

World War II ended on September 2, 1945. At that time, the act of surrender of Japan was officially signed aboard the U.S. battleship Missouri. The document was signed, on the one hand, by members of the delegation of the Japanese Empire headed by the Japanese Foreign Minister Mamoru Shigemitsu, and on the other hand, by representatives of the Allied nations (the United States, the Republic of China, the United Kingdom, the USSR, Australia, Canada, France, the Netherlands and New Zealand).
