Politico: NASA Could Send Rockets To Mars As Early As 2026

Details.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is considering options to send rockets to Mars very soon. "We are evaluating all options, including launch windows in 2026 and 2028, to test technologies that will then allow us to land humans on Mars," Politico quoted NASA spokeswoman Bethany Stevens as saying. The years 2026 and 2028 are being considered because they are the closest periods when Earth and Mars will be closest to each other, which is convenient for missions.

As Politico notes, NASA's announcement signals a shift in priorities in space exploration, as the U.S. Congress has already approved a lunar exploration program and committed NASA to ensuring that humans can stay on or near Earth's satellite for the long term. Because of this, congressmen may refuse to authorize funding for the new spending item.

NASA employees who are usually aware of the agency's plans have not been informed of the shift in priorities, a senior agency official told Politico on condition of anonymity. If NASA's new plans come to fruition, Ilon Musk's company SpaceX, whose rockets could be used for these flights, could be in a very favorable position. Ilon Musk himself in March announced a Starship mission with a humanoid robot Optimus to Mars in late 2026.
