The president of the United States has announced a big conference.
U.S. President Donald Trump plans to announce Thursday that the United States will enter into a trade agreement with a country, the first deal since the trade war began. Trump hinted at the new trade agreement in a social media post Wednesday night, though he did not specify which country was involved in the deal. However, Politico and The New York Times, citing their sources, said the agreement would be with Britain.
"Big news conference tomorrow morning at 10:00 am in the Oval Office regarding a major trade deal with representatives of a major and highly respected country, the first of many," Trump wrote.
The details of the agreement are still unclear. The two countries discussed reducing British duties on American cars and agricultural products, as well as eliminating British taxes on U.S. technology companies. It is unclear, however, whether Thursday's announcement will be a full trade deal or only the framework of an agreement, the details of which will be settled at a later date.
But it will be a significant step forward for the United States in its trade war. It could also be a signal that similar agreements could be on the horizon with other countries.
According to a Guardian report, senior British trade negotiators arrived in Washington on Wednesday and Britain is pushing for a trade deal to be signed before the UK-EU summit later this month.
