The Conclave Has Elected A New Pope

White smoke rose from the chimney on the roof of the Sistine Chapel.

The conclave at the Vatican, where the cardinals of the Roman Catholic Church elected a new pope, has ended. The end of the voting was announced by white smoke from a pipe on the roof of the Sistine Chapel - a symbol that one of the candidates won more than two-thirds of the votes and became the new pope.

The name of the new head of the Catholic Church will be officially announced soon from the central balcony of St. Peter's Cathedral. At that time, his papal name will also be known.

The conclave began on May 7. It was convened after the death of the previous pope, 88-year-old Francis, who had led the church since 2013. More than 130 cardinals from around the world participated in the vote. It was held under conditions of strict secrecy: participants were forbidden to use phones and other means of communication, access to the Sistine Chapel was closed to outsiders, and the military deployed jammers on Vatican territory.
