The New Pope Made His First Speech

The new Leo XIV began his first address with words of peace.

Newly elected Pope Leo XIV made his first address, calling for bridges of dialog to build peace. It was broadcast on Vatican News.

"Peace be with you all. This is the first greeting of the risen Christ, the Good Shepherd. I wish peace to come to your families, to all nations and to the whole earth. An unarmed, humble peace. God loves us all, that is certain," were the pontiff's first words as he stepped out to the crowd of faithful who greeted him.

The pontiff urged Catholics to "unite to go forward - after Christ. The world needs his light."
