Britain To Announce Largest Ever Package Of Sanctions Against Russian Shadow Fleet

On May 9, a number of important decisions are being made.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will announce a large sanctions package against Russia's shadow fleet amid London's increased pressure on Moscow over its aggression against Ukraine.

This was reported by RBC-Ukraine citing the British government.

Record sanctions package

Downing Street pointed out that "Russia's shadow navy will be hit by the largest package of sanctions in history, increasing pressure on (Russian dictator Vladimir) Putin and protecting critical national infrastructure in the UK and Europe."

It is noted that Starmer will make the announcement on May 9 at a summit of representatives of countries that are members of the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF) in the Norwegian capital Oslo.

The JEF consists of 10 countries: Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, the Netherlands, Sweden and the UK.

London expects it to increase pressure on the Russian economy, which is "staggered by falling oil prices and the high cost of war."

What the restrictions are aimed at

The British government explained that the main package of sanctions will target "an old and dangerous shadow fleet carrying Russian oil."

"The fleet's reckless actions pose an expensive threat to the UK and Euro-Atlantic region's critical national infrastructure and environment. The new package will mean the UK will impose sanctions against more shadow fleet ships than any other country," the Starmer Office relayed.

On May 9, the UK will impose sanctions on "up to 100 oil tankers, which are a major part of Putin's shadow fleet and are responsible for transporting more than $24 billion worth of cargo from the start of 2024."

Threats due to Russia's shadow fleet

Downing Street pointed out that shadow fleet operations not only help fund Russia's illegal war against Ukraine, but also "damage critical national infrastructure due to reckless shipping in Europe."

"Protecting undersea infrastructure from malicious and reckless incidents is expected to be a key part of leaders' discussions at the Joint Expeditionary Force summit in Oslo today," Britain's government said in a statement.

It is also pointed out that such action comes after the JEF activated a British-led advanced response system, known as Nordic Warden, in January to track potential threats to undersea infrastructure and monitor Russia's shadow fleet following reports of damage to a large undersea cable in the Baltic Sea.

London points out that undersea infrastructure is Britain's source of communications, and "carries 99% of international telecommunications data and vital energy sources, t

Who else is under attack because of sanctions

The new British sanctions, London expects, in addition to the large number of shadow fleet tankers, will hit "those behind the shadow fleet."

"Today's action further demonstrates that there is nowhere to hide for those who help fund Putin's war machine," the British government said.

British Prime Minister Starmer said every step "we take to increase pressure on Russia and achieve a just and sustainable peace in Ukraine is another step towards security and prosperity in the UK."

"The threat to our national security from Russia cannot be underestimated, so we will do everything in our power to destroy his shadow fleet operation, deprive his war machine of oil revenues and protect the submarine infrastructure on which we rely for our daily lives," said

The Role of Sanctions Restrictions

The British government also revealed that thanks to Western sanctions, Russia's oil and gas revenues have fallen every year since 2022, showing a loss of more than a third of their value in 3 years.

"The sanctions and the costs of his barbaric war are causing the Russian economy to grind to a halt - the capital fund is lost, inflation is rising and government spending on defense and security is skyrocketing," the Starmer Office added.

What other announcements have been announced

JEF leaders are also expected to announce the organization's expanded partnership with Ukraine on May 9, which "will bring the JEF group - some of Ukraine's most zealous supporters - and Ukraine even closer together."

"This will further support Ukraine's Armed Forces through intensive training, increased interoperability between military platforms and enhanced counter disinformation, as well as enabling JEF Nations to learn from the combat experience of the Ukrainian Armed Forces," the British government informs.
