The U.S. president and the German chancellor agreed to work closely together.
Newly appointed German Chancellor Friedrich Merz had a telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump, during which the two leaders discussed, among other things, joint efforts to end Russia's war against Ukraine, UNIAN reports.
According to the German federal government's website, Trump and Merz agreed to "work closely together" to end the war in Ukraine.
"Trump said he will strongly support Germany's efforts with France, Britain, Poland and other European partners to achieve a lasting peace," the press release said.
The chancellor, in turn, backed the president's call for a swift end to the killing in Ukraine and said that "Russia must now agree to a ceasefire to create space for negotiations."
Trump and Merz also reportedly agreed on a quick resolution of trade disputes and reciprocal visits.
