And suggested a substitute - books about the invasion of Ukraine.
Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitri Medvedev has criticized the system of "work on children's literature" in the Russian Federation and said there is minimal connection between the lives of Russian children and the Harry Potter series of books by British writer Joanne Rowling. The official said this at a meeting with writers, poets and war correspondents covering the war in Ukraine, the "Cold" publication reports.
"Works like Harry Potter have no relation to the lives of Russian children," Medvedev was quoted by RIA Novosti as saying. He called for thinking about how to "tear" children away from Rowling's books and admitted that the author "may be quite talented," but clarified that her works "have nothing to do with our [Russians'] life and future."
Medvedev also said that "entertainment is always more interesting" than something serious and called for working to ensure that books about the invasion of Ukraine are also read by children. The official also urged to "not give halls" to cultural figures who returned to Russia and spoke from "unpatriotic, anti-Russian positions."
Russian-controlled media reported earlier on the Education Ministry's plans to exclude Harry Potter books from the school literature program. Prior to the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, these works were studied in the sixth grade. The exclusion of the works from the program before the 2024-2025 school year was reported in the regional Ministry of Education of Russia's Tatarstan.
