Hungary's Military Intelligence Spy Network Exposed In Ukraine For The First Time

Agents were spying in Transcarpathia.

For the first time in the history of Ukraine, the SBU has exposed agents of the Hungarian military intelligence. They were spying in Transcarpathia.

The SBU reports that.

"For the first time in the history of Ukraine, the Security Service has exposed an agent network of the Hungarian military intelligence, which carried out espionage activities to the detriment of our state," the report says.

The task of this cell was to collect information on the military defense of the Transcarpathian region, to search for vulnerabilities in the ground and air defenses of the region, as well as to study the socio-political views of local residents: in particular, scenarios of their behavior if Hungarian troops enter the territory of the region.

What is known about the Hungarian agents and their handler

As a result of complex measures in Transcarpathia, the SBU detained two agents from the network of the Hungarian secret service.

According to the investigation, the handler of both figures was a staff member of the Hungarian military intelligence, whose identity has already been identified by the Security Service.

One of his agents was a 40-year-old former military officer from Berehov district, who was recruited by foreigners and put in "standby mode" back in 2021.

According to counterintelligence and SBU investigators, the handler "activated" this agent in September 2024.

Then the traitor was given a task: to study the mood of the local population and obtain the following information:

what will be the reaction of the military and civilian population of Transcarpathia if a peacekeeping contingent, particularly Hungarian military, enters the region;

what military equipment and weapons can be purchased on the black market of Transcarpathia;

what is the situation with the migration of the Hungarian population in the region;

what military forces are located in Transcarpathia, whether there are a lot of transport and combat vehicles;

how staffed are the law enforcement agencies and what is their number, and so on.

It is documented that after that the agent personally scouted the location of the Defense Forces and the coordinates of S-300 air defense missile systems in the region.

After gathering intelligence, he left for Hungary to report to his handler. To cross the border, the traitor issued a certificate of a caretaker for his sick father, who needs treatment in foreign institutions.

According to the case materials, during the meeting, the Hungarian intelligence agent handed over to the agent the cash that was envisaged for the fulfillment of the tasks. Among other things, the traitor was looking for a network of informants. The SBU found that the resident tried to recruit at least two people.

Forging an agent network, foreign intelligence hoped to expand the range of information collection, including obtaining data from frontline and frontline regions.

In March this year, SBU counterintelligence documented a second meeting between the agent and his handler. This time he received a phone with special software for clandestine communication.

New spy tasks

The traitor's new tasks included identifying official cars belonging to representatives of the Security and Defense Forces in the Transcarpathian region. In addition, the resident was supposed to find and transmit to the Hungarian secret service data on AFU losses in the war and current events from the front line, and has already picked up a relevant contact in the Defense Forces.

Another detainee is a former member of the Ukrainian Security and Defense Forces, who left the unit in 2025. According to available information, among her tasks was to inform the Hungarian secret service about the presence of planes and helicopters in the Transcarpathian region, as well as about the defense systems of the military unit where she served.

The SBU counterintelligence documented every step of the Hungarian agents and detained the defendants at their place of residence. During the search they were seized phones and other material evidence of subversive activities.

The Security Service investigators informed the defendants of suspicion under part 2 of article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (high treason committed under martial law). The attackers are in custody. They face life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
