Lithuania Sends Additional Troops To The Border With Belarus

In response to the increase in illegal migrants.

Lithuania is sending additional military forces to the border with Belarus in response to an increase in the number of illegal migrants trying to cross the border from the neighboring country.

The head of the State Border Guard Service (VSAT) Rustam Lyubaev announced that his agency had reached an agreement with the Lithuanian Armed Forces to deploy additional troops along the border with Belarus, in the border region of Varenna, starting Thursday.

"I will not disclose (the number of troops) at the moment, it is not public information, but Lithuanian troops will help us in providing security at sections of several border crossings," Ljubaev said during an interview with TV3 News.

VSAT reported Thursday morning that Lithuanian border guards sent back 48 people who tried to cross the border illegally in the past 24 hours.
